Freedom Academy
is a chartered public (free) school overseen by the Utah State Office
of Education, with 650 students in grades K-8.
The school is governed by a seven-member governing board; these board
members are elected by parents of children attending the school.
Freedom's daily operations are run by a director who reports to the
board. Parent volunteers work primarily through a Parent Teacher
Organization (PTO.)
Freedom
Academy
uses the highly acclaimed, academically rigorous Core Knowledge
Sequence, Saxon Math and Spalding Language Arts. Other subjects
include art, music, Spanish, French, Arabic, PE and computer science.
Certified teachers with extensive training implement these curricula.
We provide a traditional, back-to-basics environment by limiting
class size to 25 students, instituting a uniform policy, and asking
parents to voluntarily commit to 40 hours of school service per year.
Where is
the school located?
Freedom Academy
is located at 1190 West 900 North in Provo.
What is the curriculum for Freedom
Academy?
We are an academically rigorous, back-to-basics
school using the Core Knowledge Curriculum, Saxon Math and Spalding
Method Language Arts. Other subjects are taught using lesson plans
from the Baltimore Curriculum Project. For more specific information,
or please select Curriculum Overview on the left navigation bar.
How much is tuition? Are there any other costs?
As a public school there is no tuition. We do ask
parents to donate $200 per family to help defray costs.
Will school lunches be provided?
Freedom Academy provides school lunches 5 days a week ($2.35 per
meal). Parents may provide a lunch for their children or select the
catered lunches.
Will my child wear a school uniform?
Freedom Academy has adopted a Uniform Policy that specifies approved
clothing choices for students. To see the Uniform Policy, click here.
What is Freedom Academy's
enrollment?
The school accommodates 650 students in grades
K-8. Each grade has two-four classes of 25 students.
Does Freedom Academy
provide smaller classes than a traditional public school?
Freedom Academy limits enrollment to 25 students per class. With the
addition of teachers' aides for each classroom, at least two adults
are in each class of 25 students at all times.
What calendar will be used?
We will follow the Provo
School District
calendar with a few variations. Please click here or select School Calendar
on the navigation bar to the left to view specific information.
How much volunteer time is required from each family?
Parents agree to a minimum voluntary commitment
of 40 hours per family per year. We encourage parents to volunteer
inside the classroom, but where this is not possible, other
opportunities to provide service are available.
Will the Provo School District
provide bus service?
Currently there is no bus service to the school.
Parents must arrange to transport their children to and from school
each day. Carpool information is available at the school to assist
families in making arrangements. We are exploring several options for
bus service for the coming year.
